Salute Food and wine in Southern Italy

Two restaurateurs, their chef and a photographer, all from Melbourne Australia, travel round southern Italy.

A sort of working holiday is captured in this beautiful and informative book. Gail Donnovan's diary is the framework for the book. There are stunning, evocative photos by Simon Griffiths and beautiful but practical recipes by the chef Robert Castellani. Any home cook with moderate skills can easily master most of the recipes.

The quartet drove from Rome, south to Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily.

Although this book records a trip made in 1999 the information and advice about what to look for and expect are as relevant as ever. I had similar experiences when I travelled a similar route each side of my visit to Silvestro Silvestori's Awaiting Table Cooking School in Lecce.

Of course this is not the book to look at for specific advice on which hotel or restaurant to book, but it will give you the big picture of where to go and what to look for in Southern Italy. Plan the outline of your trip with Salute, then do the fine tuning online.

Tip: you can find a great range of food wine travel books at Book Depository.
